Gallipoli's history
Like every city in Italy, Gallipoli has a long and eventful history: the most important events of the past 2,000 years:
From the Greek foundation to the fortress: The history of the city Gallipoli on the south-east coast of Italy dates back to the 8th century BC. At that time, Greek settlers from Thera and Crete founded a colony on the coast of what is now Apulia called Callipoliswhich means "beautiful city".
Under Roman rule: In the 4th century BC, the Romans conquered the city and renamed it Gallipoli around. Under Roman rule, the city experienced a boom and became an important base for the Roman fleet.
Changing rulers: After the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Gallipoli changed hands several times. Byzantines, Goths, Lombards and Arabs conquered the city over the course of time.
Normans and Hohenstaufen: In the 11th century, the Normans finally succeeded in taking Gallipoli under the leadership of Robert Guiscard. Under Norman rule, the city flourished once again and developed into a centre of knightly culture. In the 13th century, Gallipoli fell to the Hohenstaufen dynasty, who further fortified and expanded the city.
Attack attempts and fortress construction: In the 15th century, the Venetians attempted to conquer Gallipoli several times. However, the city was able to hold out thanks to its strong fortifications. Finally, in the 16th century, the Spanish, who ruled southern Italy at the time, began building a new fortification to make the city even more impregnable.
The Battle of Gallipoli: During the First World War, Gallipoli became sadly famous as the scene of a bloody battle between the Entente powers and the Ottoman Empire. The battle, which lasted from 1915 to 1916, claimed hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded on both sides.
Today: Today, Gallipoli is a popular tourist town that delights visitors with its beautiful old town, historical sights and beautiful beaches. The city is also an important centre for fishing and agriculture.
