Almost too good to be true: Pienza in Tuscany in spring Photo: stock.adobe.com/janoka82
From our editorial team
When the lemon trees are fragrant, the light is softer and the first tables are back in front of the bars, it's spring in Italy. One of the best times of year to discover the country: no crowds, pleasant temperatures and the landscape is at its most beautiful.
Here are ten places that really shine in spring - well-known classics, but also real insider tips. All with plenty of charm, Italian lightness and spring flair: anyone travelling to Italy in spring will experience a country on the move. Whether in the north, in the centre or in the very south: now is the time for dolce vita with the scent of spring.
1st Pienza in Tuscany (photo above)
The Renaissance town is nestled in the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia. In spring, the fields turn into a green, undulating sea with yellow dots of wild flowers. Perfect for walks, photo tours and a plate of pici - the thick spaghetti from Tuscany - with pecorino.
2. Isola Bella in Lake Maggiore

A baroque garden dream in the middle of the lake: Isola Bella is part of the Borromean Islands group and becomes a blossom paradise in spring. Magnolias, camellias, wisteria - and all with a view of the snow-capped Alps.
3 Amalfi in Campania

The Amalfi Coast is famous - and not yet overcrowded in spring. The scent of lemon groves hangs in the air, the sun glistens on the sea and you can still get a seat on the terrace in the small trattorias. Bonus: The hiking trails of the "Sentiero degli Dei" are particularly attractive now.
4th Asolo in Veneto

Small, romantic and full of history: Asolo is also known as "the city of a hundred horizons". The old town centre with its arcades, cafés and flower balconies is a real place of longing in spring. Actress Eleonora Duse and writers such as Ernest Hemingway used to come here.
5th Castelluccio di Norcia in Umbria

Almost an insider tip: from the end of March, the plateaus around Castelluccio begin to bloom. The "Fioritura" is a natural phenomenon that produces carpets of purple, yellow and red flowers depending on the year and weather - framed by rugged mountains. Magical.
6 Taormina in Sicily

In spring, Sicily is a poem. And Taormina, with its view of the smoking Mount Etna and the glittering sea, is the most beautiful verse of it. Almond trees are in bloom, oranges are fragrant and the cultural programme slowly begins again in the Teatro Greco.
7th Camogli in Liguria

A fishing village straight out of a film: colourful house facades, narrow alleyways, a small harbour. In spring, Camogli is still quiet but lively. Ideal for walks along the promenade and a first gelato in the sun.
8th Parco Giardino Sigurtà in Veneto

One of the most beautiful gardens in Europe, just half an hour from Lake Garda. In March and April, a sea of colour explodes here with tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. An insider tip for nature fans and anyone who loves flowers.
9th Alberobello in Apulia

The trulli town is charming at any time of year - but particularly mild and pleasant in spring. Geraniums, lemons and rosemary bloom between the white round houses. And there's already Aperol on the terraces.
10th Lago di Garda in northern Italy

Lake Garda is not an insider tip, but it is simply marvellous in spring. The olive trees sprout, the promenades come to life and the cafés in Sirmione, Malcesine or Limone invite you to linger. Tip: the lemon gardens of Limone sul Garda.
