Italy at a glance: The boot with many faces
Italy - that's around 60 million people spread across a country that looks like an elegant boot with a few beautiful island accoutrements like Sicily and Sardinia thrown in. From north-west to south-east, the country stretches for around 1200 kilometres - an impressive distance when you consider that you can travel from the snow-capped peaks of the Alps to the sun-kissed beaches of Calabria.
A good third of mountains
Italy's geography is an exciting mix: around 35 per cent is mountainous - with the Alps, which majestically border the north, and the Apennines, which run through the country like a spine. In addition, there are 23 per cent flatlands, mainly the fertile Po Valley in the north, and 42 per cent gently rolling hills that look as if a painter had invented them for vineyards and olive groves.
The full programme in terms of climate
And the climate? Italy is a true chameleon: in the Alps and on the heights of the Apennines, alpine weather prevails with icy winters and hot summers. In central Italy, you can enjoy the Mediterranean climate - plenty of sunshine, olive trees and balmy evenings. And the further south you travel, the more subtropical the atmosphere becomes: hot summers, mild winters and the sea always within reach.
Which sea would you like?
Italy is a true coastal wonder: almost 8000 kilometres of coastline - sometimes rugged cliffs, sometimes endless sandy beaches. And as if that wasn't enough choice, Italy lies not just on one sea, but on several.
In the north-east, the boot bathes in the Adriatic Sea, which stretches as far as the tip of Apulia. To the south, the Ionian Sea - around Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria and eastern Sicily - and the Tyrrhenian Sea, which winds its way from Tuscany to Calabria and also kisses Sardinia and Sicily, take over.
To the north-west is the Ligurian Sea, home to the famous Italian Riviera. And between Sicily and Tunisia shimmers the Strait of Sicily - only 145 kilometres wide at its narrowest point.
