3. Pepperoni<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In German, they\u2019re the spicy pods you nibble on; in Italy, they\u2019re just ordinary peppers. If you like it hot, ask for \u201epeperoncini\u201c. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Grocery shop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5. Company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This refers to a signature, not a company. \u201eFirma qui\u201d simply means \u201esign here\u201c. The word for \u2018company\u2019 or \u2018business\u2019 in Italian is \u2018azienda\u2019 or \u2018ditta\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Camera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not a camera, but the room \u2013 *camera da letto*, for example, meaning the bedroom. The camera is called a *macchina fotografica*.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\n\t\t

7. Caldo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It sounds like \u201ecold\u201c, but it actually means \u2018hot\u2019. Anyone who orders \u2018acqua calda\u2019 in a restaurant because it sounds familiar will be served hot water instead of cold. You\u2019ll realise the difference all too painfully once you\u2019re in the shower, if not before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Morbido<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It brings to mind something morbid or sickly, but actually means \u2018soft\u2019 \u2013 when referring to bread, clothes or sofas. A \u2018pane morbido\u2019 is a compliment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Bar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not a pub, but the place to grab an espresso on the go, a Cornetto and a quick glance at the paper. In the mornings, the bar is a breakfast spot; during the day, a place to pop in; and in the evenings, it\u2019s sometimes the spot for an aperitif \u2013 it rarely serves alcohol on its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Confetti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not colourful paper scraps, but sugared almonds, which are handed out at weddings and christenings. In Italian, paper confetti is called \u2018coriandoli\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
