1. A currency of its own<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the 11th century, Amalfi was a hub of trade between the East and the West \u2013 so important, in fact, that the city minted its own coins. The tar\u00ec was accepted as currency far beyond the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Greater rights at sea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Tabula Amalphitana was drawn up in Amalfi and is regarded as one of the country\u2019s written maritime laws. Copies dating from the 17th century have survived to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
