Der Antragsprozess ist formell: Anfang des Jahres werden die Besuchsslots freigegeben und sind in der Regel sehr schnell ausgebucht. Ziel ist es, die einzigartige Flora und Fauna der Insel dauerhaft zu bewahren. Die Vegetation ist typisch mediterran: Rosmarin, Zistrosen, Heidekraut, Wacholder und immergr\u00fcne Kiefern bedecken weite Teile des felsigen Gel\u00e4ndes. Besonders bekannt ist die Insel f\u00fcr ihre Population wild lebender Montecristo-Ziegen \u2013 eine robuste, inselspezifische Art. Auch seltene Zugv\u00f6gel nutzen Montecristo als Zwischenstation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Die Brutzeiten der V\u00f6gel bestimmen den Besuchszeitraum: Erlaubt sind Ausfl\u00fcge nur vom 2. M\u00e4rz bis 15. April sowie vom 15. Mai bis 31. Oktober. Wer die Insel besucht, muss Verpflegung, Wasser und Sonnenschutz selbst mitbringen. \u00dcbernachtet wird nicht \u2013 die Besuche enden am sp\u00e4ten Nachmittag. Das Kloster San Mamiliano war einst ein Ort der Abgeschiedenheit und des R\u00fcckzugs. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde die Insel Eigentum des italienischen K\u00f6nigshauses und diente als Jagdrevier. Sp\u00e4ter stand sie unter Verwaltung des italienischen Staates. Die einzige Anlegestelle ist Cala Maestra an der Westk\u00fcste. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-legenden-um-einen-schatz\">Legenden um einen Schatz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arch\u00e4ologische Spuren deuten darauf hin, dass Montecristo auch als R\u00fcckzugsort f\u00fcr Piraten und Schmuggler gedient haben k\u00f6nnte. Die abgeschiedene Lage, die schwer zug\u00e4nglichen Felsk\u00fcsten und die strategische Position zwischen den Seehandelsrouten machten die Insel f\u00fcr Seer\u00e4uber attraktiv \u2013 wie auch andere Eilande des Toskanischen Archipels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Der Legende nach versteckten M\u00f6nche des Klosters San Mamiliano im 16. Jahrhundert sogar einen Schatz, um ihn vor \u00dcberf\u00e4llen zu sichern \u2013 ein Motiv, das sp\u00e4ter Alexandre Dumas in seinem Roman \u201eDer Graf von Monte Cristo\u201c aufgriff und literarisch ausschm\u00fcckte. Ob es je einen Schatz gab, ist ungewiss.
