What at first glance appears to be a folkloristic festival is actually a centuries-old, fierce competition between the neighbourhoods.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine you are standing in a medieval square, closely surrounded by 60,000 other people, making the air vibrate. Then a jolt, a shout, a wild race begins - bareback, without compromise, without mercy. Welcome to the Palio di Siena, one of Italy's most traditional spectacles. As early as the 13th century, races were held here through the city in honour of the Madonna. As this got out of hand over the centuries, the course was moved to the Piazza del Campo. The first documented race took place here in 1656.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
